Don’t joke [Part 2] (YuriAnnin)
“I won’t stay with you anymore…”
“Are you teasing? As usual?” I asked to be sure.
We’ve been together for one year now. Anna liked teasing me but this time she seemed serious.
“I’m sorry Yuria…” She answered, taking her bag.
I stayed here, looking at her, dumbfounded. No, it was impossible? Everything was fine. She left me without more explanations. Slowly, the tears started running along my cheeks. Why didn’t she want to stay with me? Humans can’t stop loving someone suddenly, right? Was it my fault? Did I do something wrong? I didn’t know. I was so empty.
I wanted to stay here, lying on my bed. It was already late. I noticed that I was still wearing my clothes. I went to the bathroom quickly. My eyes were red and tired. I cried all the night, I didn’t really sleep. I let out a sigh, trying to stop thinking about her.
“Did you have a nice sleep?” My mother asked me when I reached the living room.
“Y-yeah…” I answered quietly.
“Are you okay? Your eyes are red…” She said, looking at me, worried.
“I had a bad dream.” I said with a fake smile. “Where is dad?”
“He is in Kyoto for his work… You know, he left last week…”
Oh, I forgot. I was just too tired and my mind was somewhere else.
“I’m sorry mum, I’m not hungry… I’ll take a walk.” I said, changing the subject.
“You seem bad but don’t come back too late.” She said with a little smile.
I needed to get some fresh air. I was going to a little park. I made out someone sitting on a bench. I quickly recognized her, it was Anna. A boy sat by her side. I hid quickly behind a tree. I could see them. The boy grabbed Anna’s chin and kissed her. Yet she didn’t move, she didn’t seem stunned, but she was just impassive. Suddenly the boy started being angry. I couldn’t hear them, but she didn’t answer and looked him. Maybe she smiled because he didn’t seem angry anymore. Anna’s smile always made me calm. That hurt… I felt the tears on my cheeks, again. Why? Was she… tired of me? I put my back against the tree and went down slowly to reach the floor. I held my knees and put my head on them.
I didn’t want to talk to anyone. She patted my head gently.
“Stop crying… Yuria, I don’t like to see you like that…”
I raised my head. I recognized Juri’s voice. She helped me to stand up, looking at me with a worried face.
“Tell-” She began to speak.
I fell on her arm, interrupting her. I was too tired, I wasn’t able to stay standing anymore up. My stomach was empty and I didn’t sleep. I cried so much. She hugged me, I didn’t want to leave her arms.
“We’ll go home and you’ll tell me everything.” She said calmly.
I sat on her bed. I finally stopped crying. Juri sat next to me, waiting for me to explain.
“Yesterday… Anna told me… she didn’t want to be with me anymore… B-But I saw her… with a boy… They k-kissed…” I said, sobbing again.
Juri pulled me in her arms. I was tired of crying but I couldn’t hold it back.
“She didn’t give more explanation?” She asked, stroking my back to soothe my tears.
My stomach gurgled. Juri laughed a bit.
“You need to eat. I’ll pick up some foods.” She said, releasing me kindly.
She went to the kitchen. I laid down on her bed, I couldn’t anymore and closed my eyes, trying to stop crying.
I opened my eyes slowly, distinguishing Juri who was sitting in front of me. Did I fall asleep? I sat on the edge of the bed.
“You’re awake, now eat. I don’t want to see you sick.” She said, handing a food.
“Thanks.” I said without smiling.
Was it late? I guessed it was. I didn’t really know.
“I should go back at home.” I said, finishing my food.
“Don’t worry, I warned your mother. You know, it’s late.” She said with a smile.
I looked at the clock. She was right, it was 11 pm soon. I slept so much. I let out a sigh.
“I’m sorry Juri, it’s late and you didn’t sleep because of me… And we have school tomorrow…” I said, looking down.
I was so useless…
“It’s okay, I take care of my friend.” She answered with a bright smile.
I stared at her without talking.
“Now you’ve eaten, I can sleep on the sofa!” She teased me.
I wanted to answer, but she stood up and left me toward the living room.
“Good night.” She said, turning off the lights.
We woke up early because I needed to take my uniform at my home. After, we went to school. This year I wasn’t in the same class that Juri and Anna. It was our last year. We’ll graduate soon. I avoided Anna all day. I didn’t want to see her, it was too painful. When I left the school, I saw the same boy who was with Anna. He seemed mad again. Anna came toward him and he yelled at her. Why did she leave me for him?
Anna’s boyfriend was here all the day. I didn’t talk to her since she left me. I was still in love with her, I couldn’t forget her and erase my feelings. But today I wanted to have more explanation from her. I wanted to understand. I left my classroom quickly and waited in front of Anna’s classroom. She was with her friend, Rena. I followed her until the gate and decided to call her.
“Anna!” She turned toward me. “Please, explain me.”
“I won’t talk with you…” She walked, but I continued to follow her.
“Why? Just, explain-” I couldn’t finish my sentence because her boyfriend interrupted me.
“You spoke. You know what will happens after.” He said coldly at his girlfriend.
She lowered her head and walked with him. What? Wait. She couldn’t speak. What the… It was nonsense. Did he control her life or what?
Even though I was still in love with Anna, I said that my feelings were all gone. When I saw her I felt the pain in my heart. I missed her. Her voice, her eyes, her arms, her smile, her lips. It was so complicated to forget someone.
I was going to the library of the school. There was a little room, always empty. I liked to stay here. I opened the door, but I hit something.
“That hurt!” Someone said, a bit angry because I wasn’t careful.
“I’m sorry!” I looked at her.
Her body was covered with injuries. Did he do that? I was feeling so angry. I closed the door quickly.
“Anna…” She looked at me, afraid. “What happened?” I said softly.
She stepped back, staying quiet.
“Is it your boyfriend?” I asked, but the tears flowed on Anna’s cheek.
“P-Please… I can’t talk with you…”
I couldn’t believe it. Her boyfriend hit her, and she couldn’t talk with me. I understood a bit, but I didn’t know why she broke up with me.
“You need to leave him… Look at you, you’re…” I felt the tear on my cheeks too.
That hurt to see her, but it was worse because she was injured.
“I can’t… He will hurt me if I do that…” She said, walking toward the door.
She left the room. I didn’t follow her, it was as if I was paralyzed, my body couldn’t move. He hit her… Nobody couldn’t hurt my Anna. He will pay for that… She needed my help. I wanted and needed to help her.
“You seem elsewhere Yuria, are you okay?” My mum asked.
“I’m thinking …”
“Really?!” She teased me, laughing.
It wasn’t funny. I wasn’t an idiot. Well, not really. My phone vibrated. I took it and looked at the text.
A simple word. Where? At her home? Why? I didn’t understand but I needed to go. I left my place to Anna’s own.
“Hello Yuria, are you looking for Anna?” It was her mother.
“Yeah, is she here?” I asked hurriedly.
“No, she’s going out with her boyfriend, but I don’t know where she is.”
“Thanks…” She closed the door.
Where was she…? Park? School? Suddenly, an idea came to my mind. I ran to the manga shop of Anna’s parents.
The door was ajar. I pushed it slowly. It was quiet. I walked toward the back shop. Anna’s body was lying on the ground. She was half naked. I couldn’t believe what I saw.
“Anna!” I yelled, but she didn’t answer.
Her phone was in her hand, I touched her back slowly, she didn’t move. I took my phone to call an ambulance. But a faint voice interrupted me.
“Don’t move, I’ll call an ambulance.” I said, sitting by her side.
I didn’t know what happened. Maybe he had tried to ra- No, I couldn’t think about that… I wanted to protect Anna without thinking of that… I hoped she will be okay.
I fell asleep on the bench in front of Anna’s hospital room. I didn’t know what time it was. The policeman spoke to me, Anna’s boyfriend was a drug trafficker, and they found so many drugs in his place. So, he couldn’t hurt Anna anymore. Now, I waited for the doctor. He left Anna’s room and came to me.
“She’s weak but out of danger. You can talk with her if you want to.” I nodded and came to Anna’s room.
I felt better knowing she was okay now. I opened the door slowly. Anna was covered with wounds, yet she smiled at me. This smile…
“Did you stay all the night?” She asked.
“Y-yeah, I was worried about you…” I said, without reaching her.
“Please Yuria, come closer.” She said slowly.
I walked to the bed, she grabbed my hand. It was so warm. I wanted to cry, I didn’t know why, but I wanted to cry.
“I’m sorry, I hurt you…” She said without looking at me.
“Yeah…” I said simply.
I was staring at her. I missed her so much.
“I’m afraid.” She said suddenly.
Afraid? Because of him? He couldn’t hurt her anymore. It was over now.
“By what?” I asked quickly.
“I’m still in love with-” She began.
I released her hand abruptly. The tears flowed on my cheeks. In love? Really? He hurt her.
“What? How can you say that?” I yelled, upset.
I wanted to protect her. He hit her. How?
“…You.” She said softly.
“Eh?” I could give like single answer.
“I’m still in love with you…”
I was dumbfounded. Why did she break up with me? If she loved me.
“I didn’t want to break up with you… He threatened me… That’s why I couldn’t stay with you…” She continued.
It was as if she read my mind. Wait… He what?
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I said, grabbing her hand.
“He wanted to hurt you too…” She said and her voice cracked.
I was sorry, I saw nothing. I couldn’t protect her. I was useless. I kissed her forehead slowly. She must have been tired.
“You need to sleep.” I released her hand slowly.
“Please Yuria, come back at home, you need to sleep too.” She said with a little smile.
“I’m safe here, don’t worry.”
I guessed she was. I needed to think properly. I left the room and came to my place. I decided to come back tomorrow.
We didn’t have school today, I came to the hospital to see Anna. The doctor said that she could go out but she was always weak and had still a few bruises. When she was ready, we left the hospital. I missed her. I didn’t know how to tell her that I was still in love with her. She walked behind me. I felt something grabbing my shirt. I stopped walking. Anna put her forehead on my shoulder and she gripped my shirt in her hand.
“P-Please, don’t leave me alone… Y-Yuria… I love you… I miss you…” She sobbed.
Leave her? No, I couldn’t. I loved her too much. I turned around toward her and she released her catch. Our gazes were locked. I put my hand on her cheek and touched softly her lip corner which was injured.
“Is it hurt?” I asked her in a soft tone.
She only nodded before turning her eyes away from me. I kissed her gently. I quickly felt her replies on my lips.
“I love you Anna.” I told her when we pulled away.
